It’s already August and fall will be here before we know it. The changing seasons always reminds me that change is inevitable. Change, especially uncertainty, can shake even the strongest fundraising teams—but it doesn’t have to unravel them. In fact, seasons of change present some of the best opportunities to cultivate your team’s resilience, clarity, and purpose.Whether you’re navigating staff transitions, shifting goals, or economic challenges, here are three strategies to help guide your fundraising team in a season of uncertainty:
1. Anchor in Purpose.
Remind your team why their work matters. Revisit your mission, vision and values and connect the dots between each role and the impact you’re making. A purpose-centered team is a grounded team. Sometimes we get so stuck in the weeds of the daily tasks that we lose sight of the big picture.
2. Communicate Early and Often.
In the absence of information, people fill the gaps with fear. Our thoughts tend toward the negative so missing information can often lead to feelings of uncertainty. Be transparent about what you know, acknowledge what you don’t, and create consistent rhythms for updates and check-ins. Consider a time during team meetings to discuss concerns and challenges.
3. Invest in People, Not Just Plans.
Budgets may tighten and strategies may shift, but your team’s development should remain a priority. Equip your staff with training, feedback, and encouragement. A well-supported team is a high-performing team—especially under pressure. Fit Fundraising provides opportunities for coaching, team development and strategic planning. Consider our upcoming “GIVING TUESDAY” seminar as a way to invest in your team and your giving strategy.
Navigating uncertainty isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about leading with clarity, compassion, and confidence with the people beside you. Your team is your greatest asset—cultivate them well and lean on one another even when seasons seem to be changing.
