Sometimes the Truth Works…
In fundraising, people often believe they need to use deceptive or magical words to motivate others to give. In reality, they should do the opposite—providing the truth through open, honest, and transparent conversations.
Truth #1: Tell People Why You Are Calling
Be upfront about the real reason for your call from the start, rather than offering a polished or insincere introduction.
“Mrs. Jones, I am calling you today because our President asked me to meet with the top 100 supporters of our organization. The board wants to ensure you receive an impact report on what your contributions funded last year, and most importantly, I’ve been asked to learn what you’d like to do this year.”
Of course, you will thank the donor throughout this process. But how many donors will take a meeting when they know the real reason behind it? The vast majority will—because they understand you are not there to pressure them but to have an honest conversation.
Truth #2: Be Transparent About the Economy’s Impact
Donors are well aware of rising costs and economic challenges. Be direct in discussing how these factors are affecting your nonprofit.
- Ask donors specifically how the economy has impacted their giving plans over the past year.
- Find out what they would like to do if the economy improves.
- Share your organization’s biggest needs and how they will be funded when financial conditions improve.
Talk and dream together about what you can accomplish now and in the future.
Truth #3: Clearly Communicate Your Needs
Donors want to hear from someone on the front lines fighting for their shared cause.
- They want to know your challenges.
- They want to understand your real needs.
- They want honesty about how urgent those needs are.
You must unapologetically present your needs, challenges, and problems.
Your supporters do not give because you are successful, a great manager, or have met your quarterly budget. They give because they see YOU as their friend—someone willing to tell them the truth.
Trust me when I say, “Sometimes, the truth works…”
